In 2005, Emily and Wilma were names on everyone’s lips. These two hurricane’s were extremely large, and so there are many on the Riviera who can inform you of what to more intelligently than the media can.
It is reported in the media with large amounts of hysteria and alarm, but the reality is different. In Quintana Roo we prefer to call them natural impacts, rather than natural disasters. The BBC reported everyone dead, but it took two weeks and no fatalities for this area to get back on its feet. The early warning systems are effective, and we generally get warning about 4 to 5 days before, which is ample time. Knowing what to do as a tourist is important.
If you can get your flight home, that is great, but to do so you will need to be on the phone with your airline early. It is however a risk, as your flight may not go, and then you have a miserable wait in the airport. Check with your airline before you fly about what their recommendations are.
If you are going to stick it out, then you need to make sure you have located a place to hide. Common sense is helpful. Choose a location which is secure, and that is not surrounded by glass. Of course, we will help you all the way with that with what ever is necessary. You need water, and food for about 3 days , some candles and a book, and cash for afterwards. It is not exciting but very boring, as you are locked in doors with all the electricity switched off, so you need to find something to keep you busy. In the aftermath, everything looks smashed, but it is easily repaired. The national services are excellent, and the locals here, even tho it is a big place, all turn up to their places of work with s shovel and cleaning cloth in hand. The main thing to be weary of as a tourist is the airport. If it is in the direct line of a big hurricane, the airport could be closed for anything up to a couple of weeks.
